1. Seed Preparation

Lotus seeds have a hard outer shell that must be scarified (weakened) to allow water absorption and germination. (For the convenience of our customers, we have already processed the seeds, so you don’t need to do it again.)

2. Germination

Container: Fill a glass or bowl with warm water (75–85°F).

Place scarified seeds in the water.

Change the water daily to prevent mold.

Seeds will swell and sprout in 5–14 days. Discard any seeds that float or fail to sprout after 2 weeks.

3. Planting Sprouted Seeds

Once sprouts reach 2–4 inches long and develop small leaves:

Container: Use a wide, shallow pot (12+ inches diameter, no drainage holes).

Soil: Heavy clay or loam soil (avoid organic-rich mixes).

Steps:

1) Fill the pot with 3–4 inches of soil.

2) Gently press the sprouted seed into the soil, leaving the leaves above the surface.

3) Add a thin layer of gravel to stabilize the seedling.

4) Slowly fill the container with 2–4 inches of water (use dechlorinated or rainwater).

11

4. Growing Conditions

Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily).

Water Temperature: Keep water warm (70–85°F). In cooler climates, use a pond heater or black container to absorb heat.

Water Depth: Maintain 2–6 inches of water above the soil.

5. Fertilization

Begin fertilizing once the plant has 3–4 floating leaves.

Use aquatic plant tablets (high in phosphorus) every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.

6. Transplanting to a Larger Container

When the plant outgrows its pot (usually after 1 year), move it to a larger container or pond.

Handle roots gently to avoid damaging the tuber.

11

7. Winter Care

Zones 7–10: Leave outdoors; trim dead foliage and ensure tubers stay submerged.

Zones 4–6: Move containers indoors to a cool, dark place (e.g., garage). Keep soil slightly moist.

FAQs

When will it bloom? Lotus grown from seed may take 2–3 years to flower.

Why are the leaves turning yellow? Over-fertilization, cold water, or insufficient sunlight.

Can I plant seeds directly in a pond? Not recommended—start in containers to protect young plants.

Pro Tip: Lotus seeds can remain viable for decades if stored in a cool, dry place! With proper care, you’ll enjoy serene blooms and symbolic beauty in your water garden.

They grow in water, and seem easy enough
Saw these gorgeous flowers all over the internet and had to have them, especially for my gold fish pond. Haven’t put them in water yet, but I will very soon. Can’t wait to see what colors I’ll get. Divided into 3 gifts for Easter for my BBF and her daughter. Hope we all get lots of pretty Lotus flowers.

    WASTE OF MONEY
These flowers were such a rip off. All I got was slimy 4 inch brown vines that never turned into a flower. I split mine with my sister and the same thing with hers. What a disappointment. Should get my money back but I doubt that would happen. Don’t buy unless you want slimy brown vines growing in water.

Actually Grow, just be sure to buy aqua fertilizer too.
I bought these after seeing a Facebook ad. After a month or so. I can positively say there has been significant amount of growth. I live in Utah, I am moving them out of my glass bowl and into a much larger plant pot. The leaves have unfolded and as long as you leave them out by a window until it is warm enough for them to be outside, and make sure that you do the aqua fertilizer these babies actually do grow!!! I do not have flowers yet. I believe it takes about 3 to 4 months for the flowers to begin blooming. So far so good!

    Lotus seeds grow fast.
I bought two packages, gave one to my daughter. We both have them in water, they’re growing what looks like toad stools but neither one of us have flowers yet. You have to change the water often or it starts stinking.

    Fingers crossed!
All but two of the seeds germinated, which is way more, than I had expected. Buying seeds online is always a gamble… It took about 3 weeks for them to grow leaves. I divided them and have them in three different environments. Those in plain pond-water are looking the healthiest… There are no flowers yet, so fingers crossed!

    Lotos flower seeds
6 out of eight lotus seeds have sprouted, perhaps one more late in coming. I emptied the old water daily, replacing it with warm water in a glass container, 7 ” high, 4 ” round. They all have sprouted roots and long thin stems with emerging small leaves. I know I have to transplant them soon in mud, water on top, but I have only smallish containers for that, as I want them for house plants und not much room on my southern window sill. How to proceed. Help!

  7. Laura D.

No instructions!!! No clue what to do!
I got the pea-sized bulbs, seems to be a lot of them, but no instructions on what to do with them. I hate writing bad reviews, I don’t have a green thumb or magic wand. I need care and feeding, maintenance, temperature ranges, light amount, and troubleshooting information. Sorry, but this gets 1 Star for having no instructions whatsoever.

  8. Teeville

    A big mess!
These seeds were a big mess. No instructions except what was on the sale site. Those are bad instructions. My seeds sprouted but never bloomed.
